Introduction to Motivational Interviewing
A great MI start for professionals in higher education, health care, social work, counseling or secondary education. Includes updated concepts from the 3rd edition of Motivational Interviewing, Helping People Change (Miller and Rollnick)
- Spirit of MI: what, why and how.
- 5 key skills for effectively engaging with students/patients (OARS)
- 3 major roadblocks and how to avoid them (RULES)
- Diffusing defensiveness: What does research tell us?
- Leading to water: how to evoke interest in change
- Interactive practice opportunities to try it all out, using examples from health care, higher education and brief conversations about lifestyle.
Participants will leave the training with a beginning level understanding about MI, early level skills and, hopefully, a large interest in trying it out and learning more.
