About this course

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a particular way of talking with people about change and growth to strengthen their own motivation and commitment. This five-week instructor-led course encompasses the purpose, mindset and heart-set, tasks, core interviewing skills, and guiding methods of MI. Participants engage in learning through webcasts, written materials, videos, exercises, and practice opportunities.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain how MI is more of a guiding method than a directive one
  • Describe the four elements of MI spirit
  • Explain the four tasks that guide motivational conversations
  • Provide examples of three core interviewing skills used in MI
  • Identify three strategies to elicit change talk
