MI Level Up: Advancing Motivational Interviewing Skills in Addiction Therapy
For those practitioners who have learned the fundamentals of MI and practiced it over time and now seek more advanced training in MI. Participants can expect more collaborative discussion, demonstration, and practice exercises, and less didactic material. The focus is on recognizing, evoking, and responding to change talk and incorporating strategy in the use of the core skills (OARS). Prior proficiency and experience in the practice of MI are assumed. By the end of the day, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the strategic elements of Motivational Interviewing 2. Practice process-specific open questions, complex reflections, and affirmations 3. Practice using OARS to propel a conversation through the four processes 4. Practice strategies to evoke and respond to change talk 5. Learn to develop discrepancy through values exploration 6. Practice strategies to respond to sustain talk and decrease relational discord
