Description:
This workshop will expose participants to the evidence-based clinical method of Motivational Interviewing (MI). The workshop will offer an overview of the underlying “Spirit” and principles of MI with various clinical populations and cultural groups. Participants will be guided through exercises including live demonstration, video demonstration, “real plays” and practice in small group exercises. This workshop is appropriate for helping professionals with minimal or moderate exposure to MI.
Training Objectives:
- Identify the limitations of a confrontational helping style with ambivalent individuals or in response to relationship discord.
- Describe the “Spirit” of MI.
- Describe the 4 processes of MI (Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, Planning).
- Utilize 3 MI principles or interviewing skills to elicit a conversation about
change and elicit intrinsic motivation to change in a non-confrontational style. - Practice strategies to respond effectively to clients’ reluctance or “resistance” to change.
- Develop a plan for how to integrate MI into clinical practice.
Target Audience:
Helping professionals or paraprofessionals who counsel clients or patients in making change (i.e., Mental Health and Addictions Counselors, Psychologists, Social Workers, Physicians, Nurses, Managers, Marriage and Family Therapists, Research Study Personnel, Probation/Corrections Officers and Counselors, Peer Recovery Support, Health/Life Coaches, Resident Assistants, Educators, Behavior Specialists, Drug Court Providers, Pastoral Counselors, etc.).
