In this two-day intensive VIRTUAL training, participants will learn the fundamentals of Motivational Interviewing (MI), a collaborative conversational style that strengthens a person’s own motivation and commitment to change. Participants will be guided through a sequence of learning activities to support the development of proficiency in the application of MI.

Two Day Introduction To Motivational Interviewing Class (In-Person)

2-day virtual Introduction to MI

This is a 2-day introduction to Motivational Interviewing. This training will be held virtually on December 12 and 13, 2023. Tim Milbrandt (MINT member) and Molly Leis of the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center will be facilitating this training. Mr. Milbrandt and Ms. Leis are trained counselors and Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialists and as such, there will be many examples related to smoking cessation. However, there will also be other behavior change examples used throughout the training.

Motivational interviewing is beginning to gain popularity within the school counseling community, but it can feel like a daunting task to incorporate into one’s practice.  This 2 hour presentation and training is designed to give an overview to those people interested in incorporating MI in the school setting, as well as starting to practice what conversations through the spirit of MI might look like.  Attendees will leave this session with a better understanding of what MI is and how to begin to incorporate it with their own practice.

During this four-week online workshop, participants will learn: the fundamentals of motivational interviewing, the core OARS strategies of the motivational interviewing process, ways to identify and elicit change talk, as well as strategies for exploring and resolving ambivalence. The learning process is varied across several modalities, to maximize your opportunity to familiarize yourself with motivational interviewing as it can be applied in your practice.
